48North Granddaddy Purple Review

Grandaddy Purple from 49North is an indica strain known for its slightly purple buds, this strain has the ability to mesmerize you with its sweet, fruity flavour (or so they say).

48North Granddaddy Purple is an indica-dominant strain that is grown indoors using LED lighting. It’s machined-trimmed, hand-groomed and has the potential for strong THC potency while keeping CBD levels to a minimum.

The flower is described by 48North as having a grape and berry aroma/flavour largely due to the terpene combination of beta-caryophyllene (peppery spice and wood), beta-pinene (dill, parsley, basil), alpha-pinene (pine, rosemary) and nerolidol.

Let’s see how this flower compare to competitors like Good Supply’s Grand Daddy Purps.

Smell

When we first received the Granddaddy Purple strain from 48North, we couldn’t wait to give it a try. As we opened the package, we were immediately greeted by a faint, yet pleasant floral and woody aroma. The smell wasn’t overpowering and seemed to be quite mild, which was surprising considering the reputation of this particular strain.

While the scent was enjoyable, we couldn’t help but wonder if it could have been enhanced with a humidity shield. For those unfamiliar with the term, a humidity shield is a technique used to preserve the aromatic compounds in cannabis.

Appearance

Upon inspecting the Granddaddy Purple strain from 48North, we were immediately impressed with its appearance. It was clear that a great deal of care had gone into cultivating and trimming these buds. The buds were well-manicured, with a precise trim that showcased their natural shape and texture. The vibrant orangey-brown hairs were a stunning contrast against the light green leaves with a few dark green tips.

One thing we did note, however, was that it was difficult to discern any distinct purple tones, as the strain name suggests. This was a bit disappointing, as the purple hues are one of the hallmarks of this particular strain. However, despite the lack of purple, the overall appearance of the buds was still impressive and visually appealing.

Unfortunately, the buds were quite dry and handling them caused bits of leaf to flake off, which is never a good sign. While this did not detract from the overall appearance of the buds, it did suggest that some care may have been neglected during the curing process.

Flavour

Moving on to the flavour of the Granddaddy Purple strain from 48North, we were hoping for a pleasant surprise after being slightly let down by the appearance. Unfortunately, the taste was underwhelming.

As expected from the dryness of the buds, it was difficult to detect any strong or distinct flavours. The initial taste was a light floral taste that quickly faded into a smooth woody taste. While the flavour was not unpleasant, it was also not memorable or noteworthy in any way.

Given the reputation of the Granddaddy Purple strain, we were hoping for a more complex and flavourful experience. It’s possible that the lack of moisture in the buds impacted the terpenes, which are responsible for the profile of the plant. Perhaps with a better curing process, the flavour profile could have been enhanced and made more pronounced.

Experience

Upon smoking this strain, we noticed a head-rush type of buzz that was strong and initially felt like a mental haze. However, this quickly evolved into a state of clear-mindedness, which was surprising and welcomed. The high was definitely relaxing and had a chill vibe to it, which made it perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Overall, the experience of smoking the Granddaddy Purple strain from 48North was enjoyable and relaxing but we preferred the version from RIFF. The head-rush type of buzz followed by the clear-mindedness provided a unique and interesting experience. While the lack of distinct flavours and purple hues may have been a slight letdown, the overall effect of the strain made up for it. This would be a good strain for those who are looking for a chill and mellow high that doesn’t leave them feeling too spacey or disconnected.
